Maritime Engineering & Ports III (Water Studies)

Ports are no longer simple interchange points where goods are stored and prepared for their journeys by sea. Transport operators now consider the quays as gateways that goods must pass through in the safest and quickest way and novel information and communication technologies have to be implemented in order to achieve this. The performance of a single port can, additionally, influence the economy of an entire region. It is therefore very important to understand and manage the complex changes that are currently taking place in the ports industry and in its operation management sectors.

In this book, which contains the proceedings of the 2002 Ports and Marinas International Conference, the latest changes in the field of design and building of ports are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on new technologies, while problems related to port operations are also highlighted.
