Description
The English Historical School is less well-known and studied than the more famous German Historical School. The Germans took a holistic approach to economics, attempting to examine all economic phenomena, using material from social history. Names associated with the German School include Bruno Hildebrand, Gustav von Schmoller, Werner Sombart and Max Weber. The English Historical School, represented most significantly by W.J. Ashley, William Cunningham and Thorold Rogers, is a more empirical counterpart to the emergent and highly theorectical neoclassical school of Jevons and Marshall. Although this School of less familiar names was interested in history, it was an empirical school with an interest in application of its principles. As well as the most significant books of the three economists mentioned this collection includes a volume of previously uncollected articles. With a introduction placing the English Historical School in its historical context, this is a major chance for economists of German and English schools to re-evaluate the thinking of some significant economists.
