This book takes us right into the hearts and lives of Hong Kong's grassroots people and those of their compatriots across the border. We feel with them the tension of fifteen "countdown" years, beginning in 1982 when Britain and China first confronted each other over 1997. The continuing battle between the two governments, and the ensuing upheaval in Hong Kong society as a whole, forms a backdrop for true stories of ordinary people who find themselves affected in sometines quite unexpected ways by happenings in the political arena--a very old grandmother deprived of her only comfort, a desperate would-be emigrant, a stranded Nationalist veteran, and many others. Ruth Epp went to Hong Kong as a missionary in 1959, and since then has made her home among the people of whom she writes. She married in 1964 and has three children.
