A MentorActive Approach to Reclaiming Youth at Risk

A MentorActive Approach to Reclaiming Youth at Risk is a complete, audio-assisted training program for helping adults gain the understanding and skills they need to become lasting, positive influences in the lives of the youth they will mentor. The four-hour program guides prospective mentors on a journey into the lives of four troubled youth, which unfold during the five sessions of training. Through the eyes of these youth, participants will see life as the youth do, understand their problems, and discover how mentors can help. The stories of these youth, follow-up questions, and activities answer the following questions that prospective mentors often ask, such as · Why do some youth make bad choices? · What should my role be in the life of a youth? · How do I begin mentoring a youth? · What kind of influence can I expect to have in the life of a youth? · How do I know if I am making a difference? In addition to helping participants understand troubled youth, the MentorActive training program also covers the principles of effective mentoring, including how to understand the four basic needs of youth, how to apply the nine keys to success as a mentor, and how to work through the five stages of a mentoring relationship. The training program includes a leader s guide with directions, transparencies, and handouts. A sample mentor study guide, material for the Puzzled activity, and three audio cassettes that feature the stories of youth spoken in their own voices are also included in the set.
