Light Metals in Transport Applications

Canada has along history light metals technology. It has been home to numerous aluminum and magnesium metal producers such as Alcan, Alcoa, Alouette, Timminco, Norsk Hydro Magnesium and Noranda Magnesium. Foundries and diecasters have developed numerous applications ranging from aerospace to automotive. Many light metals technologies have been developed by the industry and the academic community together in Canada: the Pidgeon process for magnesium production, LIMCA, Alscan quality control tools, Al-Si alloy treatment, creep resistant Mg-Al-Sr alloys are a few that we can citeâ ¦ The Canadian light metals community has had the good fortune to have a dedicated Section within METSOC (Metallurgical Society of CIM) since the 1980s and the Light Metals Symposia sponsored by CIM during the annual Conference of Metallurgists (COM) have brought together the Canadian industrial and the academic light metals community with international colleagues every year. In recent years it has become a truly international event.
