Irish Historic Towns Atlas, No. 17 records the topographical development of Belfast from 1840 to 1900, tracing Belfast's growth as an industrial city. Historical maps and old views are presented in color on over a dozen large-format sheets. Additional thematic maps and illustrations highlight particular aspects of the city's history. The accompanying text has been expertly compiled by geographer Stephen A. Royle. Also included is an essay on Belfast in the later 19th century with over 8,500 entries containing historical references to features of the city's topography.
