Description
This course provides a broad overview of the enormous field of data communications, covering the spectrum from simple point-to-point links to the protocols and structures of the Internet. Beginning with careful coverage of Physical and Data Link Layer protocol issues, the program then discusses switching technologies and Network Layer concerns. Later discussions address LANs, with broadcasting and media access control providing the alternative to switching in these environments.
Having addressed all the issues associated with network connectivity, the question of interoperability is considered. Using the Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model (OSI RM) terminology, the functions of the Transport, Session, Presentation and Application Layers are discussed; the TCP/IP stack is used to provide a “real world†example. Finally, the structure of the Internet is examined and the critical role of TCP/IP explored.
