Jimmy had been told by Grandpa Yussel that the stone lions on the stoop would protect the family from all harm in the night. When his beloved grandpa dies one night, however, Jimmy's faith in the safety of the world around him is shaken.

Honest and straightforward, Searching is the story of Jimmy's journey from that fateful beginning into adulthood. As Jimmy struggles with the abrupt changes in his life he learns he must seek out new foundations to cling to.

As he matures, Jimmy finds a strong relationship with his other grandfather. Although Jimmy's mom may not always agree with the directions ''Pop'' suggests to Jimmy, their relationship leads him down many new paths, including the eye-opening paths to college and romance.

In recreating Brooklyn in the 1940s and 50s, author Livingston has surrounded Jimmy with both the peace and turmoil of the era. For, as we learn along with Jimmy, even the strongest of homes -- with the most protective of stone lions -- can't hold back the world forever.
