Description
Beethoven's fourteenth piano sonata is the famous "Moonlight Sonata." The nickname "Moonlight" did not come from Beethoven; rather, it was coined by the music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab, who in 1832 likened the first movement to moonlight shining on Lake Lucerne. The sonata was written in the summer of 1801, when Beethoven was visiting Hungary, and it is dedicated to his unrequited love, the young Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. Although it is tempting to associate the beauty of the first movement and the stormy passion of the later movements with Beethoven's relationship with Countess Giulietta, in fact this sonata was not originally intended to be dedicated to her. The dedication came about only after another work, which Beethoven had written for her, was rededicated to someone else.
