Description

Composer, architect, but also civil engineer and mathematician, Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001), completely immersed himself in the creative process, producing a diverse and multi-faceted body of work that transcends many disciplines.
He was born in Romania and completed his studies in Greece, while enlisting in the Resistance movement during World War II. He suffered a serious injury and was subsequently condemned to death in his country. Having survived the trials and tribulations of the war he became a political refugee in France in 1947 and later on became an architect working for Le Corbusier. For the first time ever, this book collects the body of his written work dedicated to architecture and to the relationship between music and architecture. The commentary draws from his seminal text, Music, Architecture (1971).
Close examination of the personal archives of Xenakis, which were acquired by France s National Library after his mysterious disappearance, reveals material that is particularly rich in architecture. Among the texts are letters, correspondence, conferences, theoretical essays, reflections. This current volume contains original material from this rare personality. Kanach treats the texts with insightful commentary. She structures the book into four parts: She starts with the Le Corbusier years, followed by the cosmic city and other writings, Xenakis, independent architect, and finally, The Polytopes an illustrated, critical index of his projects. An extensive bibliography makes this essential reading a significant point of departure for other investigations in the fields of architecture and music.
