Description

This French creator, formed in Sevres, then in Nymphenburg, participated in the fame of brothers Boch earthenware during the interwar years. His vases with animal, floral, geometric decors knew an immense success, starting with the International Exposition of decorative and industrial Arts in Paris 1925. Although a potter, Charles Catteaus' reputation was such that he was beckoned to create the decorations for the local glass industry in great expansion. He undeniably influenced the aesthetic of other concurrent art industries, including glass. Catteau was also a teacher at the superior industrial school of La Louvi re (Arts and Crafts since 1928). He formed some great renowned decorators such as (Paul Bernard, Henri Heemskerk, Paul Heller, Robert Hofman, L on Mairesse, all active in local glassworks. This predominance of Charles Catteau and his students' aesthetic gives a great stylistic coherence to contemporary glassworks' landscape, including Manage (Scailmont), Familleureux (Gobeleterie nationale) and Houdeng-Goegnies (Verreries du centre). The productivity was as meteoric in intensity as it was short in time (under ten years). Both coherent and astonishingly modern, it probably belongs to one of those unusual phenomena characteristic of the "eldorados" born within brutal industrialisations of the cities of the Region du Centre.
