Description
This book examines the way Heinrich Bullinger, who assumed leadership of the Zurich churches in 1532, described and made normative his vision of the relationship between church and state. By affording the office of minister a special status he elevated the minister above other officers in the government. At the same time Bullinger insisted that ministers participate in the life of the canton as civil servants. The book draws on Bullinger's writings as well as on documents from the Zurich state archives to examine the way that the ministers of Bullinger's day actually fulfilled the roles he recommended for them.
