Mineral oils without additives are rarely sufficient as lubricants for modern equipment. Rather, synthetic base oils have gained importance because their properties and behaviour can be tailored to suit their applications. Tribology and tribotechnology have become scientific disciplines of their own. They deal with all aspects of friction, wear and lubrication and are based on physics, chemistry and mechanical engineering. Their economic importance follows from the estimate that between four and five percent of the total energy consumed could be saved by better lubrication. It is the purpose of this book to present the information that is needed in order to understand the essentials of lubrication and to select the most suitable lubricant in any given case. All types of lubricants and additives are described, and methods for predicting their behaviour on the basis of physical and chemical data are reported.
