Salt-affected soils are common in arid and semiarid regions, where annual precipitation is insufficient to meet the evapotranspiration needs of plants. As a result salts are not leached from the soil. Instead they accumulate in amounts or types detrimental to plant growth. Salinity is the major and ever-present threat to the permanence of irrigation agriculture not only to arid or semiarid regions but also even in subhumid and humid regions. Unless salinity controlled, productivity decreases, land values drop and in severe cases the land is completely abandoned.
