India Indonesia Strategic Partnership: 1991-2008

India’s Foreign Policy towards Indonesia not only reflects warmth in bilateral relations, but it also indicates positive change in India’s perception of the region. India’s policies towards Southeast Asia not only reflect the change that has taken place in India’s perception of the region, it also reflects the transformation of international relations in the contemporary world of globalisation.The present Thesis seeks to highlight various dimensions of India-Indonesia close political relations during the Nehru period to the present strategic engagement that have evolved during 1991-2008, since the end of the Cold War era and subsequent announcement of India’s Look East Policy. The end of the Cold War coincided with Narsimha Rao’s Prime Ministers -hip in 1991. India’s response to new environment resulted in close ties between India and Southeast Asia with India becoming a dialogue partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1995 and subsequently a member of ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in 1996. Interaction through these regional bodies further strengthened the bilateral relations between India and Indonesia.
