Marine RTD in FP5: Selected Success Stories

The energy, environment and sustainable development (EESD) programme of the fifth framework programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration (1998-2002) 'required an integrated, Europe-wide approach to economic growth and environmental protection to secure a better world for present generations without compromising the future'. With almost half the European Union's population living within 50 km of the sea and with the European seas and coastal regions being among the most heavily used in the world, research under the Sustainable Marine Ecosystems Key Action of the EESD programme contributed to the better use and management of the coastal and marine environment. Selected projects from this Key Action are presented in this brochure.
