Rumi is one of the important figures in Turkish cultural history. He has a worldwide reputation for his thoughts and his portrayal of Islamic mysticism.
Within the Islamic world Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi is held one of Islam's most important thinkers and Sufis. He was born on 30th September 1207, in Khorasan in the city of Balkh. Rumi's mother, Mumine Hanim was the daughter of Rukneddin, the Governor of Balkh; his father, Muhammad Bahaeddin Walad, was known as ' the sultan of knowledge'.
Mawlana's father, Bahaeddin Walad was a very wise and an influential teacher. Walad was loved by the people and he had a great effect on them. Due to the political situation and the threat of Mongol invasion, Walad left Balkh in 1212 with his family. Bahaeddin Walad and his family first went to Nishapur and they met a famous Sufi master Fariduddin Attar there. Although Mawlana was very young, Feriddun Attar remarked his intelligence and precocity.
