Description
As the early masterwork of the author, A Farewell to Arms has a theme of objection to the imperialistic war. At the front in Italian, the hero Henry, an American volunteer, is wounded. During his hospitalization, he is carefully looked after by Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. The two people fall in love with each other. After returning to his troop, Henry is by mistake thought to be the spy of Germany army and is arrested by Italy armed force on the way of retreat. When waiting for execution, Henry awaits an opportunity to flee to Switzerland with Catherine where they live a period of happy life. Unfortunately, Catherine and their baby die from difficult labor, leaving Henry in extreme grief.
