Description

The little boy Billy was brought up in a poor family in the Ozarks mountains (located between Missouri and Arkansas, USA). He longs very much for a pair of beagles that can capture raccoons. But because the beagles are very expensive, his requests to buy the puppies are refused by his parents. Later, he learns from the ads in the magazine picked up by him that he can buy this kind of puppies in Kentucky, but they will cost him $50. With the help of his grandpa, the 11-year-old Billy manages to buy two beagles: Old Dan and Little Ann through mail order after two years of hard work by picking up strawberries and selling furs of small animals. One day, they encounter a puma when hunting. In order to protect the young master Billy, the two beagles fight fiercely against the puma and finally defeat it. Unfortunately, Old Dan dies because he is seriously injured in the fight. Soon after, Little Ann also dies from hunger strike in Old Dans grave. Billy sadly buries them together. It is not long before the beautiful red fern grows out of the grave of the two beagles. In the local Indian legend, the red fern is the seed sown by angels. Perhaps the two beagles are really the gifts sent by angels.
