Selected College Prose

This textbook is meant for use in the BA English course of Periyar University, Salem. The selection of prose and short stories has been made with great care so that students gain an appreciation of literature across the ages and across nations. The writers covered include classic essayists like Lamb, Addison and Steele to contemporary writers like Anita Desai, Amitav Ghosh, Satyajit Ray, Nadine Gordimer and Alice Walker.
Each text is preceded by a brief note on the author and the selected piece, and is followed by glossary and questions to enable the student to understand the writer, the text and its sociocultural and literary context.
