Separation Methods

The phenomenal developments in science and technology during the last two decades are closely linked with the innovative methods developed for the separation of myriad chemical species ranging from atomic to macro quantities. While separation meth- ods. are indispensible to all chemistsiconfronted with problems relating to the sepaiations of varied chemical species, they are of no less interest in fine chemical, drug and metallurgical industry. Development of selective and sensitive separation procedures without altering the nature of species in the systems has been the key to the breathtaking advances in life sciences. Developments of innovative separation methods have assumed considerable importance in important discfplines~like marine, environment, earth and nuclear sciences. With the depletion of mineral wealth, greater attention is being focussed on processing low grade ores for rare metal extraction. The separation.and removal of trace metals from induStrial effluents and procei~ures are currently attracting great attention. The preparation of ultra pure materials and compounds in sophisticated technology is dependent on rellableseparation methods. All these developments have resulted in the emergence of the new discipline of SEPARATION SCIENCE. Sastri D.Sc. (Andhra), Ph.D. (Durham), F.N.ASc. was on the Chemistry Faculty of the Andhra University from 1948 to 1985. Recipient of Sir P.C. Ray Gold Medal from the Calcutta University for contributions in analytical chemistry, he has published over one hundred research papers in volumetric analysis, solvent extraction, chromatography, ion exchange and chemical kinetics.
