Onderaards Rome

This is the Danish language edition of Rutger's illustrated guide to catacomb archaeology, from Antonio Basso in the 16th century to Giovanni Battista de Rossi in the 19th century as well as more recent excavation. The guide includes a discussion of the original function of the catacombs as a response to the problems created by the 2nd-century preference for inhumation burial. Inscriptions, sarcophagi reliefs, wall paintings and sculpture are presented along with practical information for the visitor.
