The attention given to literary criticism in the works of Catullus and the Augustan Elegiacs, poets to whom love provided a fundamental source of inspiration, might seem surprising. This new synthesis, supported by a chronological and thematic survey of the texts, evaluates the dynamic virtue of a critical reflection that allowed these young artists in search of themselves to progressively draw the genealogical tree of the elegy, which they themselves invented.
