Few organizations are as constrained as government agencies are when it comes to the topic of employee recognition. Under ever-watchful public scrutiny, using taxpayer monies, and heavily legislated, it would be easy for most federal, state, and local governments to give up trying to make a difference when it comes to creating and sustaining a motivating work environment. Yet in this issue we highlight some of the incredible success stories that come from the government sector. The lesson for all of us: If government organizations can make motivation a reality, given all their inherent limitations, surely we should be able to accomplish even more ourselves.
