First published in 1925 this text of Irish history is republished here as part of the Pluto Irish Library. The Ireland of Clarkson's day was a clear example of a fusion of the forces of Labour and Nationalism. His book documents and analysizes the overlapping of the aims of these two ideological movements, and the problems thrown up by points of incompatibility. As a history of the successive stages through which the Irish working class has passed, Clarkson's thoroughness makes the book central to contemporary Irish Studies.
