Russia and the West in the teaching of the Slavophiles;: A study of romantic ideology

From acknowledgements in front of book: My study of the Slavophiles is a result of a long-standing interest in Russian history, in Russian culture and int he intellectual development of modern Europe. Introduction: The perplexing question of Russia's relation to Western civilization has often conditioned and sometimes even dominated the development of Russian political and social thought The significance of this relation was emphasized by those thinkers who regarded it not as a connection between the whole and its part, but as a contrast between two independent and usually hostile entities. The Slavophile ideology provided the most comprehensive and striking treatment of this perennial problem of Russian and the West. Ind doing so, it gave a fuller expression to many earlier views on the subject and also greatly affected most subsequent expositions of it.
