Emphasis has been placed on fundamental principles and on the physical action that takes place rather than on a detailed analysis of the theory involved. The treatment has been made as nonmathematical as practicable, the mathematics being limited largely to simple algebra. Many numerical examples are worked out in detail and a list of problems is included in those chapters in which the solution of problems will illustate the application of the principles involved. There are review quetions at the end of each chapter. Enough of the essentials are presented ot enable the student to gain in general understanding of the subject, and yet the instructor is allowed the opportunity for enlarging upon the subjects that will be of most benefit to his students. For this reason, the material presented here has proved to be suitable for students with varied eductional backgrounds and for courses with varied objectives.
