This IDC study presents the performance of the optical automation market between 2001 and 2003 as well as forecast up to 2008. Performance and forecast are studied in terms of revenue and unit shipments together with analyses by technology (CD/DVD, Magnetic Optical [MO], etc.) and by slot size. Vendor share is studied and analyzed by technology (CD/DVD, MO, etc.) and by slot size based on vendor performance between 2001 and 2003.
IDC Japan's storage systems research manager, Masaaki Moriyama, analyzes that "Optical automation will have to take strategies to differentiate from other technologies by emphasizing its characteristics as optical disc such as write-once-read-many (WORM) function and removability so as to win the competition in the archive storage market, which is expected to enjoy future growth."
