Description
Archibald Rutledge (1883 - 1973) was an educator and poet and wrote more than 50 books. He maintained an old family plantation in the low country of South Carolina while living, most of the time, far away. He was poet laureate of South Carolina from 1934 to 1973. Many of his writings were about hunting and fishing on and around his haunts in the South. It Will Be Daybreak Soon is a short book of vignettes in which he describes his affection and understanding of the spirituality, generosity and kindness of the Negroes who worked on his plantation and in the surrounding areas in the first 30 years of the 20th century. In today's world in the United States, much of this will sound very condescending and very much politically incorrect, but he describes a very much different time and place.
