📖 Description
The editor of this book has attempted to assemble a collection of short stories and sketches typical of the great variety manifest in this genre in both Spain and Spanish America. It is obvious that our attention must be turned more and more to the southern countries of this hemisphere, and this should be done without forgetting the close cultural and spiritual kinship of our southern neighbors with the mother county: hence the composite hispanic basis of the selections. The editor believes that the student's interest is often dulled by too much vocabulary thumbing, and has endeavored to give a greater number of pages with less of the mechanical word-hunting usually involved. Many words and phrases which the student is likely not to know are translated at the bottom of the page on which they occur. However, no effort has been made to translate all such unknown expressions; the sole object has been to render the task of reading a little more enjoyable, and the turning of pages a little less tedious.
