From the author: This short paper discusses two early Vedic compounds beginning jarad-: jaradasti- and jaradvisam (RV 5.8.2). Superficially jarad- looks like a form of the adjective jarant- I jurat- 'old', but it will be argued that in both cases a diachronic "accident" has produced this illusion. The reconstruction involved also makes it possible to suggest that Jaradgava, the vulture in the Hitopadesa, is not called 'Old Bull', (1) but bears a traditional name more appropriate to a vulture.
