From the supplier: Creation of a single European market, poor economic conditions, a series of reinsurance industry losses and the change in insurance purchaser attitudes make the international insurance market of the l990s diametrically opposite from the easily operated and highly profitable 1980s. Only large and highly committed, well capitalized reinsurers will be able to survive and even they must develop new services to replace a lessening demand for reinsurance. Reinsurers should be able to serve as consultants to internationally expanding direct insurers and can develop special products to cover mergers, sales and portfolio losses.
