From the supplier: MAEstro is a public-domain multimedia authoring environment developed at Stanford University to be workstation-based and scalable to complement the available media. The authoring system is designed to enable users to focus on the creative task rather than the use of the tool. MAEstro supports multiple styles of authorship, selection of varied combinations of media, portability and simultaneous interoperability across multiple, heterogeneous platforms. The software's four main logical components are media editors for accessing and managing various types of media, the authoring application that coordinates the individual editors to define the structure of a multimedia document, an inter-application messaging system and a port manager that associates TCP/IP port numbers with programs to enable them to use the same remote procedure call protocol. Use of MAEstro to create multimedia applications, the concept of 'media segments' and future development plans for the software are discussed.
