From the supplier: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued new regulations for nutrition labeling of multi-ingredient processed meat and poultry products effective Jul 6, 1994. The new rules follow the same format and style as the Food and Drug Administration's recent labeling regulations for the rest of the food industry. However, the USDA has added 'lean' and 'extra lean' to the list of nutrient descriptors. Products must contain less than 10 grams of fat to qualify as 'lean,' and less than 5 grams for 'extra lean.' Food sold to establishments such as restaurants and grocery deli departments is exempt from the labeling requirements.
