From the supplier: The Virtual Classroom (VC) teaching and learning environment is a set of group-communication work spaces and facilities in software: some of the spaces are based on the traditional classroom environment, while others support forms of interaction rarely found in traditional classrooms. The VC software is accessed via microcomputers through a telephone hook-up to a minicomputer or mainframe; the asynchronous connection is available at any time from any location. VC is intended to improve access to advanced educational experiences by providing a collaborative learning process that emphasizes group or cooperative efforts among faculty and students. Active participation and interaction by students and instructors is emphasized; the VC system described was developed by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Collaborative learning has been promoted under many names, but all involve group conversation and activity guided by a faculty member; the VC software and its use are described.
