From the supplier: Depressed commercial property values provide an opportunity for property owners and managers to lessen their property tax liability by appealing their real estate taxes. For a successful appeal, taxpayers should make a request early, make a personal visit to the assessors' office early, be polite and truthful when disclosing information, be personal, and be ready to provide the necessary documents and data. Among the most important documents that an appealing taxpayer would need are the current operating statement, rent rolls and information on vacancies and concessions, third-party data that substantiate operating expenses and income, pictures of the building and of rival buildings, and sale prices of these rival buildings. The steps involved in a sample assessment appeal set in California are described. Suggestions for achieving an equitable assessment are also offered.
