From the supplier: Member unrest at rural electric cooperatives signals the need for major changes in management that should not be ignored. After a major snowstorm in Dec. 1993, members of a rural electric cooperative demanded the resignation of the nine-man board of directors and the management. This experience resulted in the election of three new directors at the following annual meeting and several lawsuits against the former board and the cooperative. However, these changes were presaged by years of customer neglect, state law violations, management anomalies and problems with harassment and discrimination, all of which served to isolate the board from the members. The new manager was faced with negative media and membership publicity, low employee morale and a new board president. The steps taken to address these ills included a customer-oriented approach, a strictly above-board operation and meetings on better relations between management, employees and members.
