From the supplier: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are defined by the World Bank as noncommercial institutions outside of government that are private, non-profit organizations working with developing countries to alleviate suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, undertake community development, and provide basic community services. NGOs are providing an increasing proportion of net aid receipts to developing countries, and the World Bank and other development agencies increasingly are working with NGOs. NGOs provided approximately $5.5 billion in assistance in 1987, almost $1 billion more than the International Development Association provided in 1988. NGOs were involved in 50 World Bank-supported projects during the 1990 fiscal year,.
