From the supplier: The RISC System/6000 products, POWERstations or POWERservers, from IBM are suitable for a variety of applications, from instructing undergraduates to advanced scientific research. These machines have the POWER (Performance Optimization With Enhanced RISC) architecture. There are nine models; six of these models can be tailored as technical workstations, multi-user systems, or file servers. The models are versatile, expandable, very fast, and compatible with workstations from other vendors when on a network. The models do not have a long learning curve; there is special help in every model. IBM installs the systems, and software may be preloaded. The 550 model is the top of the line in the POWERstation line; it exceeds the performance of some supercomputers. The POWERserver 930 and 950 are designed to serve an academic department or research lab.
