From the supplier: A series of guidelines are developed for planning an academic wide area network (WAN). A WAN enables the integration of local area network (LAN) and mainframe resources over a wider geographical region, providing greater access to information sources, improved productivity and, even, lower costs. The major topics to consider when planning a WAN include are what are the range of services it will provide, who are the intended users and what are their needs, what are the available WAN technologies and how can they be effectively integrated while ensuring maximum flexibility, how will the WAN support and integrated existing LAN and mainframe systems, how will the WAN be tested and evaluated and how can this all be done within cost constraints. No particular WAN design can meet the needs of all its users nor anticipate all future developments and requirements. Consequently, WAN planning should ensure maximum flexibility and pathways for expansion.
