From the supplier: The insurance industry has done a poor job settling the claims arising from the Oct 20, 1991, Oakland/Berkeley Hills fire. Many people complained that the insurance companies were insensitive to their needs and reneged on promises. Some consumers state that the insurance industry's reports that 85-95% of the claims from the fire have been settled is too high. Safeco Insurance Cos assistant director of claims Mary J. Frawley states that the lessons to be learned from the fire include: the claims process should be thoroughly explained, adjusters should not be rotated, and realistic time frames for claims should be set.
