From the supplier: The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 includes provisions that require building managers and construction firms to provide the disabled with fixtures and facilties that allow the easier access. These accessibility guidelines have now been incorporated into state building codes, thus, forcing managers of existing buildings to comply within a few years. This will involve much remodelling and construction that will not significantly enhance occupancy rates. However, such concessions should result in significant property tax assessment reductions. The experiences of building managers in California and Illinois are instructive on the process of compliance with these accessibility guidelines. The steps in reviewing facilities and laws, choosing consultants, planning costs and actually renovating buildings are also discussed.
