From the supplier: Two surveys provide insights on how state and local governments use derivative products. The study conducted by the General Accounting Office (GAO) reveals that extent of usage significantly differed among the various types of governments, that each group of users used derivatives differently and that users of derivatives had more assets than nonusers. Moreover, the GAO survey shows that hedging was the main reason why the respondents used derivatives. On the other hand, another study, conducted by the Government Finance Officers Assn., discovered that governments are highly interested in using derivatives but that only a few have actually used them.
