From the supplier: The dynamics of airline competition in the deregulated market created by the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 was examined using life cycle analysis. Airline data from 1977, 1985 and 1989 show that the changes undergone by the industry occurred in accordance with the life cycle concept. With deregulation came new entrants and rapid market growth, leading to the competitive turbulence which reached its height in 1985. This turbulence created a pressure on the industry, prompting some of its players to form mergers in an effort to remain viable in 1986. Market leaders eventually survived, but the weaker ones suffered from losses and eventually withdrew from business.
