From the author: Early Arab chronicles do not indicate in which year the future Abbasid caliph al-Mahdi received this laqab, or honorific title, nor the reasons why. The inscription on a new-style Abbasid silver dirham first introduced in Khurasan in A.H. 145 is used as the primary evidence for dating the first use of the laqab. The particular title is related to a power stuggle between the Sunni Abbasids and members of ??Ali's family.
