From the supplier: Bose Corp's pioneering efforts in adopting a new inventory management system has given the company an outstanding image in fostering customer/supplier relationships. JIT II, an offshoot of the 'just-in-time' inventory management technique (JIT), operates on the same principles as that of the original JIT, with added benefits. Utilizing an on-site 'liason office', an employee from the supply end of the chain is given authority to purchase and place orders with his company. Thus, the customer representative's presence eliminates the need for planners, buyers and salespeople. The benefits brought by the implementation of JIT II outweighed the risks involved. Since the system necessitated less people, less erros were made and inventory reduction was faster. Moreover, the customer company was given better supply assurance and was able to respond more effectively to supply crisis. The favorable outcome of the system's implementation in logistics control compelled the company to apply the same principles to its transportation network with successful results.
