From the supplier: Sixteenth century women's prayers on childbirth reflect the importance of the female role in procreation. The role elevated women from their normal subordinate position in 16th century English society. Prayers formed a dialogue between woman and God from which males were excluded. 'The Monument of Matrones' collection of women's prayers by Thomas Bentley was published in 1582. Prayers covered the whole period of pregnancy and often served as preparation for death. All prayers acknowledged that the danger and pain of childbirth were the result of Eve's sin.
