From the supplier: The General Accounting Office (GAO) reported that there is little empirical evidence to demonstrate that managed care healthcare plans provide cost benefits to employers. Replying to a request from House Ways and Means Subcommittee Chmn Pete Stark, the GAO reported that insufficient research on newer health maintenance organizations and lack of consideration of age and health status in comparing programs nullified claims that managed care controls costs. Employer participation in managed care plans rose to 55% in 1992, compared to 5% in 1980. The Bill Clinton health care plan favors a managed care system.
