From the author: Vineyard hectarage in France has declined notably in recent decades, but with considerable regional variation. The varietal composition in most wine-producing regions has also changed. Hybrid and low-quality vinifera grapes have been replaced by recommended varieties. Certain premium varieties have been planted in areas where they had not been previously grown. The principal force behind the changes is a greatly reduced and altered wine market. French policies and those of the European Community have intensified some trends in an attempt to solve the wine-surplus problem.
