From the supplier: The title of Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening,' as well as the books first title, 'The Solitary Soul,' were most likely inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poems on sleeping, dreaming and waking, most notably 'The Lake ---- To --- -.' Relationships between Chopin's novel and Poe's poetry can be found in both works' preoccupation with dreaming and reality. Chopin's aesthetic portrayal of these themes, however, is the opposite of Poe's.
